I personally subscribe to Murphy's Law when it comes to insurance.  I plan for the worst, but hope for the best. Most insurance policies are brought out of habit and that nagging doubt at the back of the mind that if the insurance is left to lapse, then something will almost certainly happen. Homeowners and Rental is one of those types. Unlike auto insurance, there are no legal requirements for you to buy insurance on your dwelling.  Lets said Murphy's Law strike again and your house burns down. Are you ready?

Do you have a home inventory? A home inventory is essentially a list detailing all of your belongings. While this may sound like a hassle to compile, it will be a vital aid if your house is ruined in a hurricane, a fire, or if someone decided to go shopping at your house; while using their five finger discount. In these scenarios and more, a good inventory should be kept up to date at all times so that you are prepared for the worst from the start. If you keep adequate records, it will help out with any ambiguity later as insurance companies will often need proof of any items lost or damaged. A little work prior will save you time, headaches and efforts later. At a bare minimum, one should take a video and do a quick walk through of your house. You should keep that video file in another location or the cloud (web storage). If the NSA is a concern, keeping that video file in a fireproof safe at your house is another option.

What is the next step? Filing that claim. Contact your local insurance agent and they will help you during the whole process. A good agent will keep tabs on the claim, keep you up to date and make sure that there is clear communication between you and the adjuster.
